March 9 CRATER CAMP (18,370 ft/5,600 m) Today's the toughest day of the climb. We repack our gear, packing only what we need for this one day. Then, after breakfast, we head out and up. The porters carry the rest of our gear down to Millennium Camp, at 12,500 ft. where we rendezvous with them on our descent - in two days. We slowly zigzag our way up to Stella point for 7-8 hours until we reach the edge of the crater floor, still less than 1,000 ft. from the summit. Sometimes there is snow along this part of the climb. The remainder of the day we spend relaxing, taking it easy, and enjoying our camp at the highest possible altitude. |
